FAQs

What forms of payment do you accept?

I accept all major credit cards and also offer the option to checkout with PayPal.

Do you ship outside of the US?

Yes I do! In the checkout, you will see available shipping methods for international orders. Please note that international orders will take a little longer to reach you than US orders.

How will you ship my order?

Shipping options and charges will be listed in the checkout. Your skeins will come packaged in double plastic mailers to ensure that your yarn is safe from moisture and leaks. All forms of shipping will offer at least two layers of protection to keep your yarn dry and free from outside influences.

I have allergies. Is that a problem with your yarn?

All of my yarn is currently created in my home studio and comes from a smoke-free, pet friendly home. I wash all of my skeins after dyeing to avoid skin irritation or sensitivities to any of the substances it may come into contact with before it reaches you. However, if you are highly allergic and experience a reaction, try gently soaking and washing your yarn in a gentle wool cleanser like Soak or Eucalan. Be sure to follow all washing instructions carefully.

If you are allergic to wool, you may not find that my wool-based yarns work well for you. I currently do not offer any synthetic yarns (except in very small blends added to protein or animal fibers) or any cotton. All fiber ingredients are listed for each yarn. If you have further questions, feel free to email me at info@potionyarns.com.

What is Ready to Ship yarn?

Yarn in the Ready to Ship section of the shop is yarn that is already dyed, processed, and ready to go in the mail. There are a limited number of skeins available of each colorway listed so if you need a larger order, check the Dyed to Order section of the shop to place a custom order. Don't see the color or base yarn you want in the Dyed to Order section? Message me to see if it's available in the quantity you need.

What is Dyed to Order yarn? Why does it take so long to ship?

It's very difficult for a small, independent hand dyer to keep a full inventory of all colors on all available base yarns in stock at all times. In order to offer you a large range of colors and base yarns, many of my yarns are available as a custom, dyed to order option. When you pay for your order, your skeins will be dyed, processed, and packaged especially for you in the quantities you need. I recommend this option for all larger orders and projects as dyeing the yarn at the same time helps to further ensure a more even color match between skeins. The process of hand dyeing and packaging yarn can be quite lengthy. I use multiple layers of color to create my unique, dimensional skeins and then wash, dry, and may reskein each hank for beautiful, smooth results. This can take several days to a week in addition to labeling and packaging. I estimate most dyed to order skeins will take 2-3 weeks to process before they are shipped but I do my best to get them out to you even more quickly whenever possible. You will receive updates about the status of your order so you will have a better idea of when to expect it. If you need your order sooner, please message me BEFORE placing your order so I can let you know if I'm able to accommodate your request.

How do I contact you?

What is gauge? How does it affect the yarn I choose?

Gauge (also known as tension) is a term that knitters and crocheters use to determine the measurement of a project and how much yarn is needed to complete it. Usually gauge is determined by creating a swatch with your chosen yarn and measuring how many stitches you get per inch. All gauges listed on my website are averages determined by the Craft Yarn Council. Gauge is somewhat subjective and is a handy measurement but is not universal. You may get a different gauge with my yarns than the recommended gauge. Check your pattern, if you are using one, to determine the recommended gauge and how much yarn you need.

What are base yarns?

Base yarns refer to the undyed hanks of yarn that I use to create my unique colorways. Different base yarns have different weights (which can determine gauge of your project) and sometimes different fiber content and spin structure. Different base yarns can take the same dye recipe differently so I offer photos of each type of yarn in that particular colorway so you can see how the color will look when you receive your order in the mail. This is why I list each base yarn separately. Dragon's Breath on the Foxy Sock looks quite different than Dragon's Breath on Bombshell Worsted. For more information on the individual base yarns, check out our Base Yarn page. The base yarn used for each product is offered in the description on that yarn's product page.

Do you offer gift wrapping?

Sorry, at this time in my business, I don't have the personnel to offer gift wrapping services for orders. However, your yarn will come wrapped in tissue paper and tied with yarn into a lovely package.

Why does my skein look slightly different from the last skein I bought? Why does it look a little different than the picture on my computer? Why do the two skeins I bought together look slightly different from each other?

Hand dyed yarn is very different from industrially produced yarn. Each skein of my yarn is dyed by hand with the color placed by me on each part of the skein. This is what makes your yarn unique and individual, just like you are! Colors can vary between AND within dye lots. I do my absolute best to ensure that the skein you receive will be as close as possible to the picture, description, and any other skeins of the color purchased, but there will always be slight variations because I'm not a robot or machine and each piece of art I create will have unique variables. This is why I strongly recommend alternating between skeins on larger projects to balance out the colors more evenly.

All computer and electronic device screens will have some variations on how they display color. I work very hard to ensure quality, professional photos of my products and give detailed descriptions of the colors to help you feel confident in your purchase. Please keep in mind that screens can vary in how they display color based on your monitor's settings. Most often with my yarns, I find that the colors are very close, and in person you will see even more depth and dimension that the computer screens couldn't quite pick up. So if you love a color in my shop online, you are going to be crazy thrilled with the beautiful, unique result once you hold it in your hands!

Hand dyed yarns are such a magical, exciting adventure to dye and to create with! Enjoy the subtle variegations and revel in the knowledge that each skein you purchase from my shop is a completely unique work of art that you can create an individualized, one-of-a-kind project from!

I'd like to sell your yarns in my shop. Do you sell wholesale?

Yes I do! If you are a yarn store owner with a brick and mortar shop, send an email to info@potionyarns.com and I will get you my terms.

Do you offer specials, deals, news, etc.? Are you on social media?

Yep, the best place to see updates in my shop, deals I'm offering, etc is to follow me on Facebook and Instagram and join the email newsletter. Sign up for the newsletter can be found on my homepage: scroll to the bottom and enter your email where it says Get Connected to join the list. You can find buyable pins of my yarn on Pinterest as well as seeing lots of different areas that I get inspiration from.

Do you offer returns on your products?

I offer returns for a complete refund on all Ready to Ship yarn and any Dyed to Order yarn purchases that total under 8 skeins within 30 days from date of shipping. For larger orders, please message me to check the eligibility for returns. Sorry, but I am unable to offer returns on items after the 30 day deadline.

To be eligible for a return, your item must be clean, unused, and in the same condition that you received it. It must also be in the original packaging (it is not necessary to send it back in the same polymailer; but must include the original tags).

If you haven’t received a refund yet, first check your bank account again.
Then contact your credit card company, it may take some time before your refund is officially posted.
Next contact your bank. There is often some processing time before a refund is posted.

If the item wasn’t marked as a gift when purchased, or the gift giver had the order shipped to themselves to give to you later, please contact me to determine whether you are eligible for an exchange. You may be required to provide a receipt email from the original purchaser or additional information so that I can track your order.

Shipping

You will be responsible for paying for your own shipping costs for returning your item. Shipping costs are non-refundable. If you receive a refund, the cost of return shipping will be deducted from your refund.

Depending on where you live, the time it may take for your exchanged product to reach you, may vary.

If you are shipping an item over $75, you should consider using a trackable shipping service or purchasing shipping insurance. We don’t guarantee that we will receive your returned item.

The best way for me to determine eligibility of returns and how to handle each case is for you to contact me via email to initiate the return. I do ask that you read my return policies first; but I always try to work with you to find a good solution that is fair for everyone. I have an amazingly low return rate (less than 1% of sales!) and I work hard to ensure that I can deliver quality goods and services and that I'm open to working with my customers as each case is unique.
