She’s a vision in white, sultry and seductive, with swaying hips and a voice like velvet. She swishes her skirts and a flash of vibrant fuchsia petticoats catch your eye. Her shiny dark hair is beautifully coiled around a spray of orchids set just off her face. Too much beauty for some to handle, they will censor her and try to keep her from shining bright: but she won’t be kept down and her voice will live on through history.
Inspired by the stunning jazz singer, Lena Horne, Cotton Club is an homage to one of her most famous costumes: a pure white dress accented with pinks and purples in her petticoats and the flowers in her hair. Horne was a talented singer and performer who got her start in the chorus line of the famous Cotton Club before moving on to films and a prestigious nightclub career. She was never really given a chance to show all she could do in Hollywood, however: her scenes were shot in such a way that they could be cut from the final film if theaters didn’t want to show African American stars on the screen in non-stereotypical roles. Because of this, Lena never got the starring roles she felt she could handle and as a result, her film appearances were few and small; she moved on to nightclubs where she made a name for herself with her professionalism and beautiful voice. Lena may never have had the leading lady roles she craved, but she was a star and the vision of her in a white dress with orchids in her dark hair is an iconic image.
I use professional quality acid dyes to ensure vivid colors that will last. No two skeins are identical: if you need more than one skein for your project, be sure to alternate rows to ensure variegation. Please note that each skein is a unique work of art and may not exactly match the photos, but will be very close. I may reskein your yarn before shipping to avoid tangles if necessary.
